Purse thieves strike as victims pump gas | Crime

Hernando County, Florida-- Deputies search for purse thieves who struck as a driver was filling up her car at the gas station. Shortly after taking her purse, the thieves cashed her checks as well. 

Deputies say that on Monday, July 23, just before 5:30 p.m., a vehicle burglary occurred at the 7-11 located at 14333 Spring Hill Dr. in Spring Hill. The female driver was pumping gas when they say a white male entered the passenger side of her vehicle and removed her purse from the front seat.

According to deputies, a review of video surveillance from the 7-11 showed the suspect getting out of the passenger side of a dark colored Dodge Charger with tinted windows. The suspects then drove the Dodge Charger from the parking lot, west bound onto Spring Hill Dr. and out of the view of the camera. 

On Tuesday, July 31, a similar incident occurred at the Hess gas station located at 4707 Commercial Way in Spring Hill. Deputies were unable to provide a photo or video evidence, and they say it is unknown if these two incidents are related.

Other similar incidents have occurred in various counties throughout the Bay area.

Deputies say it appears the suspects are targeting lone females that leave the passenger door unlocked and a purse in view while pumping gas. If the female spots the suspect and maintains visual contact with him, he does not approach.

Sheriff Al Nienhuis would like to remind all citizens to remain aware of their surroundings at all times and to take all necessary precautions pertaining to personal safety.
