High school students learn to "Share the Road Safely with big Trucks"

Tampa, FL-- High school student drivers in Tampa will learn how to safely share the road with large trucks and tractor trailers at school this Thursday.

Tampa, Florida -- Kids around Hillsborough County are in store for a long weekend!

Hillsborough County schools are closed Monday, Jan. 21 and Tuesday, Jan. 22 in celebration of Martin Luther King Junior Day.

Students will return to school on Wednesday.

"Surprise Patrol" to announce finalists for Hillsborough’s Excellence in Education Awards

Hillsborough Co., FL-- The Hillsborough Education Foundation traveled to schools and educational sites around the county today to surprise 17 top-notch educators as finalists for this year’s Ida S. Baker Diversity Educator of the Year, Instructional Support Employee of the Year, and Teacher of the Year awards.

The 17 finalists, selected by their peers, represent the “best of the best” from Hillsborough County Public Schools.

A winner in each category will be named at the 2013 Excellence in Education Awards, presented by the Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union Foundation.

Tampa, FL– Hillsborough County Public Schools Guidance Services has announced their hosting of multiple financial aid information nights for high school students and their families this month.

According to the county, University financial aid representatives will explain the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) process, review how colleges and universities compile financial aid packages, and discuss available federal aid.

Hillsborough magnet, school choice applications due tomorrow

Hillsborough Co., FL – The deadline to submit middle and high school applications for magnet programs and School Choice is Wednesday, January 9.

According to Hillsborough County Schools, Choice Options allows students to apply for a magnet school or another public school with available space within Hillsborough County.  

Students, who wish to remain at their current magnet or choice school, or prefer to attend their attendance area school, do not need to complete an application.

2nd Annual Re-Purposed Doodad Sculpture Competition

Tampa, FL-- "One man's trash is another man's treasure."- that statement couldn't ring more true for students from 66 Hillsborough County schools next Tuesday, when they will compete in the 2nd Annual Re-Purposed Doodad Sculpture Competition.

Organizers say a total of 3,000 cigar boxes (left over after the actual cigars were donated to American Service members) will be transformed from "throw-aways" to "art" by students from all grades.

A jury of artists will judge the complete works and award various prizes, and even a summer art scholarship, to the winning students.

Hillsborough Public Library to give books to local schools

Hillsborough Co., FL-- The Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library will give new books to some of Hillsborough County’s school children through the Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) program.

Two book distributions are scheduled. The first is on Dec. 13 at Sulphur Springs Elementary School, and the second is on Dec. 14 at James Elementary School. All the books purchased are science related, and targeted for third and fourth graders. The children will be able to keep these books as a part of this book ownership initiative.
